PAUL WEEDEN - ATTAKULLACULLA (1974)
Paul Winston Weeden was an American-Norwegian jazz musician (guitar) and orchestra leader. In his hometown, he played with the boy next door Wes Montgomery as well as JJ Johnson, before moving to New York and Philadelphia. He led the Paul Weeden Trio with Don Patterson on organ and Billy James on drums, recording with Dexter Gordon and Sonny Stitt (Blue Note Records, 1962). He also appeared in Coleman Hawkins and Jimi Hendrix's crews in the 1960s. After touring in Sweden (1966), he moved to Norway (1971). With Magni Wentzel, Håkon Nilsen and Svein Christiansen, they made I remember Clifford for EBU's "Eurojazz" (NRK, 1971). Weeden became central to the Club 7 environment, where he led the band Youngbloods and his own quartet (with Ole Jacob Hansen on drums, Bill Mulholland on guitar and Ray Taylor on bass). In 1974 he released the album Attakullaculla in collaboration with Egil Kapstad (piano), Bjørn Jacobsen (bass) and Ole Jacob Hansen (drums). Finn Sletten and Earl Wilson were also on the record. He died in 2011.
