ORIENTAL SUNSHINE – DEDICATED TO THE BIRD WE LOVE (1970)
In the late 60s, the Norwegian west was not an ideal place to dream of creating psychedelic folk, as heard on records from abroad, with the Beatles, Joni Mitchell and Ravi Shankar. But Nina Johansen and Rune Walle (later Hole in the Wall and Flying Norwegians) defied the forces of nature, or rather played with them and formed Oriental Sunshine. They brought with them the Indian Satnam Singh whom they met by chance on the streets of Bergen: There were not many colored people in Norway at the time, but Singh incredibly proved to be a skilled flute and tabla player! The trio, reinforced with jazz fines such as Espen Rud, Sture Janson and Helge Grøslie, made one album released on Philips in 1970. It was produced by Mikkel Aas and the sound engineer was Jan Erik Kongshaug.
