Description
The Major Chord – The Major Chord – CDEP
The Major Chord was a Trondheim group that was formed in the winter of 1983-84 and consisted of Ole Kvaal (vocals, synth), Atle Karlsen (synth), Sindre Kartvedt (guitar), Ask Brantenberg Cold (bass) and Sola Johnsen (drums).
They borrowed the band name from Robert DeNiro's jazz club in the film New York, New York and the music was strongly inspired by contemporary post-punk and synthwave interspersed with a touch of decadent interwar Berlin.
They made their live debut as support for the American Lyres in the fall of 1984 at the Ritz in Trondheim and over a four-year period they played several times in Oslo, Bergen, Bodø and Tromsø.
Somewhere along the way, Kartvedt quit. The band became a quartet and Kvaal took over guitar duties. It was at this point that the band went into the studio and recorded the four-track 12-inch Circles . Not long after, it became clear that Sola had to prioritize DumDum Boys and The Major Chord were a thing of the past. Later, Karlsen became keyboardist and the fifth member of DDB.
Today, Sola is still active in DDB while Ask Brantenberg Cold is back in his first band Edge and plays fortrock guitar.
