MUZZLEWHITE – MISERY SQUARE (2022)

Muzzlewhite was around the turn of the millennium, when "melancholic" rock and alternative country were the big thing in this country. Muzzlewhite managed to release three or four albums and received much critical acclaim. The band drew influence from many genres, such as dark country, indie rock, singer-songwriter, oldies and pop. "That's Why I Love You, Darling" and "Henry's Fuck-Up" became radio hits, and the latter was later covered by Minor Majority. Karen Jo Fields also contributed, and received much praise for her suggestive vocals on "My Hero." The band did not formally disband, but has considered itself "indisposed" and still plays the occasional concert, most recently as a warm-up for Minor Majority at Rockefeller.

The reborn Muzzlewhite in 2022 is currently the studio project of Tore Aurstad (also known as a crime writer, cartoonist and frontman of the punk group The Oxydants), with help from Øivind Thune (St. Tomas Band). But the music, songs and arrangements are really in the same style as the "old" Muzzlewhite – guitar-based, twangy and dark. Somber, yes, but with a smile lurking beneath the sadness.
