Description

Farmers Market was formed in Trondheim in the fall of 1991 by students at the jazz department at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. They started out as a free jazz quintet, but later focused on Bulgarian folk music, inspired by a study trip to Bulgaria. Their debut album Speed/Balkan/Boogie from 1995 contains recordings from Moldejazz 1994, including with a female singing group from Bulgaria, Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares, also known as Angelite. Farmers Market is particularly known for playing music in unusual time signatures (or as they sometimes call them, "endangered time signatures"), such as 15/16 and 11/8, and for their potpourri of well-known songs in unusual arrangements.
