DUSTY PEW - NOT TO BE EATEN AS CANDY (1990)
Dusty Pew was strongly influenced by The Cure, both musically and vocally. They could also be compared to Joy Division and Killing Joke. But the band did not copy. The group described themselves as anti-perfectionists. They released the single "I Will Be There" in 1988. That year they were awarded the Rogaland Avis rock scholarship, together with Blonde on Blonde and Tex Halle Twisters. In 1990, their guitarist, Stein Inge Haaland, made the animated short film "Nothing", consisting of music from Dusty Pew. The band gradually began to make a name for themselves in the rock scene. The debut album "Not to Be Eaten as Candy" was released in 1991. There it was demonstrated that they had developed. The group themselves described the music as happy and light. Critics described their new sound as warmer, and that the musical landscape was painted with a broader brush. The comparisons with old 80s groups were no longer as strong. The album was recorded in Sound Suite Studio, with the experienced Terje Refsnes behind the controls. Vocalist Ø. B Haaland wrote the majority of the lyrics, but the music was written together. Dusty Pew was an ambitious group. After the band disbanded, it developed into Gargoyles and Crane. Line-ups: Trine Schiötz Oldeide (synth/clarinet), Stein Inge Haaland (guitar), Øyvind Bakke Haaland (vocals), Ole Petter Hamre (bass), Tønnes E. Hana (guitar) Jonny Stenberg (drums) and Jim E. Birkeland.
