Description
DOODLE BUGS - LITTLE LAILA (1969)
Dance band from Elverum led by vocalist, composer and guitarist Åge Heltzen. The group is best known for their debut single "Lille Laila" from 1966 - an album that still holds the sales record in the Faroe Islands. No artist in the entire world has been more popular in the Faroe Islands than Doodle Bugs. At the end of the 60s, all artists - including The Beatles - had to stand behind Doodle Bugs on the Faroese hit list. At one point in August 1968, the group occupied the top four spots on the list. Many of the lyrics to Doodle Bugs are consequently influenced by their relationship with the Faroe Islands. Doodle Bugs was started in 1965. They quickly became known as "the bedbugs from Østerdalen" with the tour bus "Ormen Lange". The first line-up consisted of Åge Heltzen (vocals, guitar), Ola Meljordshagen (lead guitar), Ragnar Bernhus (bass), Rune Olbergsveen (drums) and Undis Lien (organ). This was the group that debuted on record in 1966 with the single "Lille Laila" - a song that has since become synonymous with Doodle Bugs and their success as a dance band. Before the group's first LP was released, two of the members left and were replaced by new ones; Bernhus by Rolf Kjernet (bass) and Olbergsveen by Arild Engemoen (drums). Several replacements followed, and during their career around 20 members visited Doodle Bugs. Among them were Tollef Sætersmoen, Jens Erik Lindmoen and Bernt Østbye. The permanent frontman, vocalist and songwriter throughout their career was Åge Heltzen, who was responsible for most of the material that Doodle Bugs recorded. The album Lille Laila was first released in 1969, and has since been reissued twice, first on the label Nett Records in the mid-70s, and in 1979 on EMI. Both editions had new covers. The combined sales for these three LP releases exceed 100,000 copies.
